Export Haulage is mainly the first step of international shipping. It involves the shipper and forwarder. So, it can also affect the forwarders warehouse place. When the shipper sends the product to the forwarder, he needs to store it somewhere before sending it to the next level.

The goods would typically move on the road (by truck), rail, or a combination. If we agree that the shipper is responsible for this part of the transportation, it would typically be arranged through a local transportation company. If, however, the consignee is responsible, it often makes the most sense to use a freight forwarder who can offer export haulage as part of international transportation.

Custom Clearance

When you are shipping a product to another country, there are two custom clearance services involve. One is at the export level, and the other is at the import level. Here we will be talking about export customs clearance.

For every shipment leaving a country, customs formalities must take place to meet regulatory requirements. Customs clearance is a transaction whereby a declaration is developed, and required documents are submitted to authorities. Origin Handling

Origin handling is a step in which physical handling and cargo
inspection involves.

In short, when the cargo is received, it is inspected (tallied), planned for loading, consolidated with other cargo, stuffed into a container, and moved to the port where it is loaded onto a ship.

Ocean Freight

As we have talked about before that we are dealing with LCL less than container load. Most of the time LCL involves an ocean freight system to ship the product to the next country.

The freight forwarder decides on a shipping line to perform the ocean freight from origin to destination to meet the shipments’ required timeline. The freight forwarder and the shipping line have a contract of carriage for the container, and the shipper or consignee, in this case, is not subject to any direct interaction with the shipping line.

Import Custom Clearance

After the ocean freight reaches its destination, the port has its custom clearance. And forwarder has to follow all the rules. The taxes and GST are involved at this stage. A thorough inspection is also done at this stage. The custom then clear after verifying everything then forward the product to the next step.

Destination handling

For the origin, cargo handling is also required in the destination before being released to a consignee. In short, destination handling includes transferring the container from the ship to shore and from the port to the forwarder’s destination warehouse. It also provides un-stuffing of the box and preparing the cargo for the consignee to collect.

Import Haulage

Basically, this is the last step that involves international shipping. It is a process in which the product will reach its final consignee.

A freight forwarder or a transportation company usually takes the responsibility for the delivery of the product. A shipper arranges this type of transportation from his end, it would normally make sense to use a freight forwarder which can also arrange for import haulage. The import haulage typically covers transportation to a specific address, but not unloading from the truck, which is the responsibility of the consignee.

Consider Dehumidifiers

If you are using a shipping container for storage purposes, please consider dehumidifiers. Dehumidifiers can suck the humid air from the box.
Remember that you’ll need to regularly empty the dehumidifier of water or set up a hose system that can plumb the collected moisture back out of the container.

Improve Insulation

Improve Ventilation

Proper ventilation can remove the condensation. Ventilation funnels warm and moist air out of the container. At the same time, it will capture the outside air with the same ambient temperature inside.
There are plenty of ways to install ventilation in a shipping container; however, ventilation isn’t always the answer. If you’re shipping goods in areas that typically see wet conditions, ventilation could pull moist air in and make condensation worst. Avoid using ventilation to stop condensation in a shipping container if you operate in humid climates.

They are used widely on ports. There are smaller, rail-mounted or rubber tire gantry cranes are available.

  • They are very expensive.

  • They are limited to one site.

Reach Stacker

A reach stacker is a fast and efficient option for handling containers. Capable of lifting very heavy containers, a reach stacker can move single containers around on-site,. They are also used to transfer the containers between the ground, the stack, rail wagons, and chassis. They depend on the model because some reach stacker models can stack up to 2-3 containers at the same time with different height and size.

Truck Crane

This container lifting equipment is mounted on a truck carrier.
They are not the same as side loaders.
A truck crane will lower containers to anywhere within the arc of a truck crane’s reach. However, this reach is limited by the weight of containers.

A truck crane is really only suitable if you need to lift empty or lightly loaded shipping containers. Typically a truck crane will only handle 20′ containers. The price tag sits at around USD 250,000 for the lifting apparatus, plus the cost of the truck.

  • They are mobile and can be used at multiple sites.
  • Truck cranes can lifts and transports more than one container.

Two Types

Permanent change of Stations PCS

PCS is the program when you are assigned to a location for more than 20+ weeks.

The extended period of temporary duty is for 31 days and a maximum of 20 weeks.
For TDY, it is common that only a small subset of your household belongings will be able to travel with you to your new location.

CONUS are moves that start and end within the 48 contiguous states of the US. Most moves in the US Military are CONUS moves.

OCONUS (International + Hawaii & Alaska)

Moves to or from Alaska and Hawaii along with international stations are considered OCONUS moves. These moves are more complicated and each location may have additional limitations on what you are allowed to transport.

Household Goods Move HHG

A Household Goods “HHG” move is a move completed by a government-furnished moving company, also called a Transportation Service Provider (TSP). During an HHG move, your transporter is responsible for packing all of your belongings and transporting them to your new location. If anything becomes lost or broken during your move, you can work with your transporter or the Military Claims Office to receive financial compensation for your items.

HHG is approved for ONUS, OCONUS, and PCS. and HHG is not approved for TDY.

Personally Procured Move (PPM)

Personally procured move can be described as “do it yourself”. It is the type of move in which the military helps you with moving.
You are totally responsible for your move. You are totally responsible for any damages to your household or items. If damage happens during packaging service or during travel, the damage is totally on you.
You can hire a local moving company or commercial moving company for your move.
As an incentive to move PPM, the government will pay you 95% of their cost to hire a moving company on your behalf or perform your own move. 

PPM is approved for CONUS, OCONUS, TDY, and PCS.

Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) Shipment/Storage

In general, if you are traveling overseas (OCONUS), the government will pay to ship one POV to your new location, but you will need to arrange for it to be dropped off at the designated drop-off center before departing.

(Note: There may be some overseas bases, such as in Japan, where it is not possible to have a car. In these cases, the government will pay to store your POV stateside for the length of your tour.)

Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) Shipment/Storage is only approved for OCONUS move.
